Santa Rosa Island Backpack*
We’ll be traveling 46 miles by Island Packers boat from Ventura Harbor to beautiful serene Santa Rosa Island where we’ll backpack 1.5 miles with about 100’ of
elevation gain to our base camp at the Water Canyon Campground (120’) where we’ll spend three nights. The campground has potable water, flushing toilets, a shower,
food-storage lockers, picnic tables, and three-sided wind breaks. Travel time from Ventura Harbor to Santa Rosa Island is 2.5 – 3 hours; we’ll see lots of marine
life as we cross the Channel, certainly some sea lions, probably some dolphins, and perhaps a whale or two. The dry landing on the island will be at the recently
renovated pier.
Santa Rosa Island is the second-largest (84 square miles) of the eight Channel Islands. It has rolling grasslands, deep canyons, a coastal lagoon, and beaches with
sand dunes, driftwood, and tide pools. It is home to the island fox, colonies of seabirds, seals, and sea lions, as well as 500 plant species including the rare Torrey Pine. Easy-to-strenuous hikes and ranger-led tours are available.
COST OF TRIP = $111.13 each (boat trip $98 + campsite $13.13). The DEADLINE FOR PAYMENT is THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2012.

narrow canyon, with a lovely seasonal stream criss-crossing the trail numerous times, and abundant wildlife. As the trail begins to gain elevation and move
north away from the stream, a stunning vista begins to emerge. Gently rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Mountain. Simply wonderful!
